2.5 and 5GBASE-T: A Study of Development and Deployment

For more than 15 years, Category 5e cabling has provided a robust operational channel for 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T. In late 2016, a new IEEE Standard (802.3bz 2.5/5GBASE-T) was published, defining the requirements of new applications to provide an economical incremental network speed increase to service wireless access points.  As most of the pre-existing installed wireless deployments utilized Category 5e and Category 6 cabling, it was envisioned theses speeds should attempt to operate over the existing infrastructure to minimize deployment costs and expedite adoption. This may seem like a promising way for some network managers to extend the life of their existing infrastructure. However, there are risks involved with designing for system operation over a cabling infrastructure that was developed nearly 20 years ago, and many will find attaining the maximizing network speed problematic.
